Meanwhile, West Ham gave their survival hopes a huge boost when defeating fellow strugglers Wolves 2-0 at Upton Park, courtesy of an own goal from Ronald Zubar and a further strike from Freddie Sears.
Danny Welbeck, Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan helped Sunderland to a 3-0 home win over Blackburn, while Stoke City also won at home when beating Everton 2-0.
