Javier's title dream

Few of us expected the boy from Guadalajara to have quite such an impact this season. Openers, equalisers and especially winners, scored with head, feet, heel and even face... Javier Hernandez lives to put the ball in the net.

He’s also shown a dedication to the cause, a humbleness and an understanding of what it means to play for United that has endeared him to Reds everywhere. We caught up with him to ask him how he was coping with the sharp end of his first title challenge as a United player…

The season is entering its crucial phase now – have you been involved in title chases before, while playing in Mexico?
In my first season with Chivas in 2006 we won the title. I didn’t play too many games but I scored a couple of goals and helped us win the trophy. We also won another domestic tournament in 2009 called the Interliga – the winners of that go into the Copa Libertadores.

What has that taught you about how to approach the busy and important end of the season?
Well, it’s given me a small amount of experience of these situations, but I have still talked to my team-mates here about what to expect in – and how to prepare for – this crucial part of the season. It’s all about staying calm, focusing on the task in hand and believing in what you are trying to achieve.

What advantage do United have over Chelsea and Arsenal in the title chase?
The only one is the fact that United is a big club with a great history in these battles. Several of the players have been here and done this before, while the newer players have a huge desire to succeed because we know about the history of Manchester United and it doesn’t include many painful defeats.

Do you look around the changing room and think, yes, these are the players who can win trophies this season?
Yes, when I look at my team-mates, and the quality of the players in the dressing room, I feel that we can win any trophy we compete for.

What do the senior players who have been here and done it before – Giggs, Scholes, Rio, Fletch etc – say to the newer and younger players about how to handle it and what is required?
They tell us that we need to play like Manchester United players, always remembering the club’s rich history and never giving less than 100 per cent on the field. Being a United player is about winning – you can never think about drawing or losing games. It’s that attitude that can help us to win trophies.

What do you think is the most important thing for United to concentrate on for the rest of the season?
To produce consistent performances and avoid mistakes – and that starts with the goalkeeper and goes right through the team. We need to avoid silly errors to give ourselves the best chance of winning, and to play every game like it’s our last one.

What would a Premier League winners’ medal mean to you?
It would mean a lot. I want to win that medal badly, and also to lift the trophy. It would be a perfect end to my first season here.

Javier Hernandez has exceeded everybody’s expectations this season, including those of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The United boss admitted recently that he thought it would take the Mexican striker at least a year to settle in at the club, develop physically and adapt to the English game.

And yet, nine months after Hernandez made his debut at Wembley in the Community Shield, he’s netted 20 goals and staked a solid claim for a regular place in the manager’s starting line-up.
Sir Alex has certainly found it difficult to leave him out. Since the beginning of March, Hernandez has started 11 of United’s 16 games (and scored in two of his three substitute appearances during the same period).

If we split the striker’s United career in two we get a better picture of the shift in how Hernandez's fortunes have changed. In his first 21 United games (nine starts) he netted eight goals, with five coming from the bench. His subsequent 22 run-outs (15 starts) have yielded a further 11 strikes, with only three as a substitute.

Of course, one of Hernandez’s greatest qualities is the variety of goals he scores.
At heart, he’s a supreme goal poacher who’s lethal in and around the six-yard box; his finishing has often been likened to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's. But it’s also interesting to note that almost a third (six) of the Mexican's goals have been scored with his head. That’s not bad for a man who stands just 5ft 9in tall.

He’s also netted five winners and opened the scoring on nine occasions (including his most recent goal, scored after just 37 seconds against Chelsea).

His most recent strike, after just 37 seconds against Chelsea, took his tally to the season to 20. It's the first time a United player has reached that figure in his first season since Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived back in 2001.

Little wonder, then, that everybody - from Sir Alex Ferguson to Pele - has been signing Hernandez's praises of late.

Review 2010/2011: January

January
West Brom 2-1 (A)
Stoke City 2-1 (H)
Liverpool 1-0 (H)
Tottenham 0-0 (A)
Birmingham 5-0 (H)
Blackpool 3-2 (A)
Southampton 2-1 (A)
Player of the month: Javier Hernandez – The Mexican striker bagged four goals, including a winner at West Brom and one at Blackpool, where he made a sensational impact off the bench.

The Reds turned over a new leaf in January, registering a rare away win in the league on New Year’s Day before going the rest of the month undefeated.
Only just, though. Twice United trailed at half-time – by two goals at Blackpool and a single strike at Southampton – only to launch stunning comebacks and emerge victorious. Both games featured goals from Player of the Month Javier Hernandez.
Other highlights included a hard-fought FA Cup win over Liverpool and a 5-0 victory against Birmingham, in which Dimitar Berbatov netted his third hat-trick of the season.
We hope you enjoy our recap, although broadcasting rights regrettably prevent us from showing any FA Cup action.

Review 2010/2011: October

October
Sunderland 0-0 (A)
West Brom 2-2 (H)
Bursaspor 1-0 (H)
Stoke City 2-1 (A)
Wolves 3-2 (H)
Tottenham 2-0 (H)

Player of the month: Javier Hernandez - Four goals, including a stunning back-header

Stat of the month: The draw against West Bromwich Albion was the only occasion all season that United dropped points in the league at Old Trafford. The Reds won 18 of 19 home league games.

October began with sewage leaking into the Reds' dressing room and a similarly unappetising display on the pitch at the Stadium of Light. Sir Alex's men still earned a point at Sunderland, though, before going 2-0 up at Old Trafford a week later when West Bromwich Albion came to visit. But then, a Patrice Evra own goal and an uncharacteristic Edwin van der Sar clanger gifted the Baggies a draw.
It was a case of doing just enough against Bursaspor when the Turkish side arrived at Old Trafford, Nani scoring the only goal of the game with a long-range screamer. Then, away at Stoke, Javier Hernandez netted twice (once with an impudent back-header) to hand United a first away win in the league, before the Mexican came off the bench to sink Wolves with an injury-time winner in the Carling Cup.
A 2-0 home win against Tottenham completed the month, although controversy reigned after Nani's blatant handball went unpunished by referee Mark Clattenburg.

Betting: The season ahead

Javier Hernandez Chicarito

Manchester band The Courteeners recently sang: "You’re not 19 forever" and United fans will be hoping those words ring true next season as the Reds bid for a 20th English league title.
Sir Alex’s men are 2.98 (2/1) to retain the trophy and, at 3.45 (12/5), Chelsea are once again the team Betfair customers believe will push them closest.
Whether or not those odds are correct will depend on how successful the Blues restructure this summer. The squad is ageing, the likes of Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard are not the forces they once were and the way Javier Hernandez tore them apart at Old Trafford suggests Chelsea have problems at the back. Guus Hiddink, who is 1.36 (4/11) to be their next manager, is an excellent boss but building continuity out of the malaise at Stamford Bridge might prove beyond even him.
With Manchester City 4.98 (4/1), this might well be the season we see an all-Manc title tussle. The noisy neighbours will undoubtedly spend big again but
they’ll probably have to. Club captain Carlos Tevez is 1.44 (4/9) to leave after he vowed never to return to Manchester so the Blues will need to re-think their attacking options.
Arsenal endured a miserable end to the season, which is why they are out a 9.0 (8/1) for a first title for eight years. With Cesc Fabregas 1.82 (10/11) to depart the Emirates another transitional season could be on the cards.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are at 12.0 (11/1) to win the league. Kenny Dalglish did a good job in reviving the Anfield side’s season last term but whether he can sustain them over an entire campaign remains to be seen. Steven Gerrard is no longer the dominant force in midfield that he was - let's see if Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll have the ability to play key roles in a title bid.
United's title defence begins away at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday 13 August (date subject to change).

Javier Hernandez scores against Spain

Mexico and Manchester United star Javier Hernandez highlighted his predatory skills again with a goal against Spain in Wednesday’s international friendly but insisted that he would rather have had his country win.

Mexico had to accept a 1-1 draw against newly crowned world champions Spain despite taking the lead through an early Hernandez goal.

The strike again showed the immense potential of the new United summer signing but the Mexico international wished he could have helped his country celebrate a victory instead, in a game that was held in celebration of Mexico’s Bicentennial of the country winning its independence from Spain in 1810.

“Obviously I feel very happy but I would have loved and would have preferred a win much more,” Hernandez told a packed press conference.

Hernandez insisted that the players were not feeling any side effects from their summer exertions in South Africa.

“We felt great,” Hernandez added. “We were at the orders of (coach Enrique) Meza, who also deserved this bit of reward.”

The precocious striker – nicknamed Chicharito or “Little Pea” by fans for his eye colour – also thanked fans and media support after having secured a move to the Premier League giants – a transfer which has brought much pride to the country’s countless football fans.

“I’m thankful for all the support. Thank God for these moments,” Hernandez said. “I’m keeping my calm about it, taking it step by step and enjoying my career but I don’t feel more than or less than anybody.”

Hernandez has been in stirring form since joining up with his new club. The striker has already scored twice for the Red Devils in their pre-season tour of North America, as well as one goal against his employers while playing for former team Chivas Guadalajara in a friendly between both clubs. The pacy attacker also crowned his competitive debut for United in the Community Shield with a goal against Chelsea to help the club to a win over the Premier League champions.

Hernandez also scored twice for Mexico during their World Cup campaign and was named the fastest player in the tournament.

Javier Hernandez looking forward to Mexico's clash with Spain

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is relishing Mexico’s clash against World Cup winners Spain.
The youngster has impressed since it was announced that he would be moving to Old Trafford, scoring twice in the World Cup before scoring on his Red Devils debut in the 3-1 Community Shield win over Chelsea on Sunday.

"[I'm] happy, happy, happy [to get off to a good start with United], but we must go step by step, very calmly, and realise that this is just the beginning," Hernandez noted cautiously.

"I consider myself a player, nothing more nor less than anyone else, and came to the club to work — if I get to participate I [hope I] will be there forever."

Hernandez's focus for the next two days, though, will be Mexico. He arrived in Mexico City on Monday ahead of El Tricolor's high-profile friendly against Spain.

"I am very happy to be here," Hernandez told the Mexican Daily Record upon his arrival. "I am always grateful, happy to be in my country once more. Playing the world champions, any team would want to play them."

Although the match may not necessarily carry many long-term benefits, as interim coach Enrique Meza will be around for this game only, Hernandez said he and his teammates are taking the game seriously.

"We are going to enjoy it immensely," Hernandez said. "It is against the World Cup champions and we are going to focus from now until the game in order to look for a victory."

The Mexican insists the team winning against Spain is more important than personal glory.
"The important thing is that the national team wins, not who scores the goals," he added. "Like any player joining his national team, I will always want to be part of the national team."
