Revealed: There's only ONE reason why Rooney fails at World Cup

Wayne Rooney admitted he was missing his son Kai during an emotionally-charged World Cup call to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United striker struggled to find the 43-goal form that turned him into one of the world's most feared forwards.

Ferguson spoke with Rooney during the tournament and he admitted that he struggled to be away from his new-born son.

Baby Kai is just over six months old and Rooney admitted it was difficult to be away from his son for such a long period.

England's management were aware of Rooney's problems, but were convinced he could cope during the tournament.

Rooney failed to recapture the form that turned him into a contender for World Player of the Year before the tournament.

He has not scored in two World Cups and the closest he came in South Africa was an effort tipped onto a post against Slovenia.

Ferguson claimed the pressure on Rooney to be the star turn at the tournament had got to him, but it has also emerged he was missing his son.

Rooney is currently away on a family holiday and Ferguson is determined to resist the temptation to play him at the start of the season.

He wants the striker to have a decent rest ahead of the new campaign and is expected to miss United's Premier League opener against Newcastle.
