Wayne and Coleen Rooney christen son Kai in a low-key ceremony

For their son Kai's first birthday, Wayne and Coleen Rooney splashed out on a £90,000 Disney-themed party.

But when it came to marking the one-year-old's spiritual journey through life, they wisely decided to tone things down.

The millionaire couple hosted a low-key, private Christening for Kai in Liverpool yesterday, with just family and the tots' godparents in attendance.

Among the guests at the intimate ceremony were Coleen's parents Tony and Colette McLoughlin and Wayne's parents Thomas and Jeanette.

The christening - which comes just a few weeks after Kai's lavish first birthday party - is another demonstration the Rooneys have got their marriage back on track following allegations of Wayne's alleged infidelity.

The family gathering explains Wayne's absence from the United For Unicef gala dinner at Old Trafford last night.

His teammates, including Michael Owen and Wes Brown, and their WAGS all dressed up for the annual fundraising dinner.

Kai's christening came after Wayne returned to Manchester United for the first time since threatening to leave the club last month.
