Insidious (2011) -320MB

The creators of ‘SAW’ have turned their hands to making an old fashioned horror film, although naturally it comes with a twist. It is a master class in how to make a traditional haunted house movie into a new and terrifying watch.

It will have you jumping out of your seats without resorting to a blood fest or gore.

It stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a happily married couple with three children who move into their dream home. When their young son falls off a ladder in the attic and into a coma, unexplained things start to occur in the house. They wisely sell up and move to another neighbourhood, but things continue to go bump in the night at their new home so they turn to a medium for help.

Directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell ‘Insidious’ is a deliciously creepy and chilling supernatural thriller, which plays on your fears and apprehensions of the unknown. It is the first time the pair have worked together since the original ‘SAW’ movie and they make a winning combination.

They know how to create mounting tension and suspense culminating in genuinely scary moments. These are amplified here by the use of a soundtrack of screeching violins a la ‘Psycho’, which end in sudden silence heightening your fearful expectations. It also makes a nice change in a haunted house film to see the family move out at the first sign of paranormal activity rather than remain there till the bitter deadly end.

‘Insidious’ cheekily pays homage to the ‘SAW’ franchise, and seems to be channelling ‘Poltergeist’ with the introduction of the medium and her geeky ghost-busting team. It is at this point that it turns bizarrely from a haunted house movie into ‘The Exorcist’.

Wilson and Byrne make a convincing and likeable husband and wife. You end up caring about them and their family and what happens to them. They are joined by a solid supporting cast which includes Barbara Hershey as Byrne’s overly possessive and controlling mother-in-law. Watch out for Whannell who plays one of the medium’s bickering assistants.

‘Insidious’ is stunningly shot and the supernatural scenes are wonderfully gruesome and macabre. It is refreshing to see a horror film which doesn’t rely on blood and guts or torture porn for that matter to frighten the life out of its audience. This is a rather fun and enjoyably scary ride which ends on a chilling note.

The Lincoln Lawyer [2011] -322MB

This film really did make California look like a crap hole.Tasked with defending rich lothario Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillipe), who’s been charged with assault, lawyer Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) finds himself and his family in danger when he deduces the truth
behind this and former cases he’s worked on.

This is based off the 2005 crime best-seller, that I still have not read, but after seeing this, I don’t really think I need to read it.

There’s not nothing new here that we haven’t seen before. The plot plays out like you would expect a courtroom drama to play out, and almost everything that happens seems like it came from some other film of this nature. However, that’s not always a bad thing.

Director Brad Furman keeps this film going at a slick and quick pace. He keeps us interested in this plot because he films this so tightly, that we actually do start to wonder, what exactly is going to happen next. The screenplay written by John Romano goes well with Furman’s direction, because a lot of the twists and turns that this story takes here, actually seem believable and not put on. I love old-style courtroom thrillers, and this brought me back to the good old days of when you could just sit back, and watch a crime be solved right in front of your eyes.

My main complaint with this film is that I didn’t like how this was shot. Furman uses a very dirty look that was trying to show California in a crap way, but instead just seemed dumb and intentional to show how much of a crap hole it can look like. It looks gritty for the sake of looking gritty and this just seemed put-on.

I think Mick Haller is the perfect role for Matthew McConaughey, and he actually pulls it off real well. It’s been awhile since McConaughey has actually head-lined a “good” film, probably because he’s been too busy with those shitty romantic comedies, but this role was a good reminder as to why he doesn’t always have to do them.

He’s smug and cocky but at the same time, determined to get his job done in any way possible. McConaughey does a wonderful and believable job as Haller, and has me hoping he’ll continue to take roles like this in the future. The rest of the supporting cast is awesome. Ryan Phillipe is very evil and vindictive as Louis Roulet, who as time goes on, becomes a very, very bad kid. Marisa Tomei also pops up and does a good job as Maggie, and let’s not forget William H. Macy who is always a sight to see, and is not different here as Frank. The rest of this great cast is filled with the likes of John Leguizamo, Michael Peña, Josh Lucas, and Frances Fisher.

Consensus: The Lincoln Lawyer doesn’t offer anything new to the courtroom thriller genre, but a well-paced story, with interesting mystery, and great acting from the cast, keep this somewhat predictable film, entertaining enough.

The Other Guys (2010) -When top Cops are Busy..-

The first thought that came to my mind after watching "The Other Guys" was WOW! it really is an amazing, hilarious action-comedy after some time. And when I searched for the movie this is what I found "The Other Guys” are the main guys at the box office, knocking off “Inception” to take the No. 1 spot. The buddy-cop parody starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg made $35.6 million in its opening weekend, according to Sunday estimates from Sony Pictures. SO you'll have an idea what a kick ass movie it is..
I'll briefly give a summary of it now..

Story: The movie begins with giving us the picture of top cops in NY police Highsmith and Danson played by Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson. Then a tragic accident makes a void for new heroes in NY police.
This is where Allen(Will Farrel) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) comes to play and after going through so many repeated insults by their colleagues, will they finally able to achieve what they hope ??? thats your job to find out.
I can guarantee you one thing -that is you can laugh any more you want from the begining to the end. You'll know it for sure if you've watched Will Farrels previous movies right...

Comics graphic novels by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, RED is an action-comedy starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren.I've changed my post format a little and give comment if I should stick on to this. To give you a glance of it....

Things I love about 'RED': well first of all a Bruce Willis movie. A great actor can always have a great influence on the movie. He might be bit old for action now but the role is tailor made for him.

Also its not all about a conventional action flick, but it has got some humour as well. So I recommend you its a really nice movie of this season to watch.Enjoy...

American Gangster(2007) -two sides to the American dream-

Even though its a few years old today I'm taking you to another greatest movie of the recent times which is based on a true story. You have all watched Denzel Washington (from The Training Day, Man on fire) and Russel Crowe ? Then how about a movie with both of 'em combined. It would be great right. Yeah its a simply awesome movie. If your not sure just see the trailer here first and if u can see the comments put onto that youtube video. Then you will realize. You might wonder...

why I'm giving all the Russel Crowe movies lately. Its not for anything but I truly appreciate his roles and they are far better than the latest releases of some movies. So to start off just a heads up.This movie contain scenes of drugs and violence so it may not be suitable for children. The movie basically takes us back to 1960's. The story goes on like this..

Following the death of his employer and mentor, Bumpy Johnson, Frank Lucas establishes himself as the number one importer of heroin in the Harlem district of Manhattan. He does so by buying heroin directly from the source in South East Asia and he comes up with a unique way of importing the drugs into the United States. As a result, his product is superior to what is currently available on the street and his prices are lower. His alliance with the New York Mafia ensures his position. It is also the story of a dedicated and honest policeman, Richie Roberts, who heads up a joint narcotics task force with the Federal government.

The battle of a dedicated policeman and a hard core drug lord who can go all the way to find what he wants is magnificently transformed into a movie and you can not get your eyes off it until the vey end.To tell you about its greatness "American Gangster" was Nominated for 2 Oscars. Another 5 wins & 28 nominations. So I dont think you dont need any more explanations as to why you should watch this. IMdb -7.9/10.See it today itself and enjoy!
