Manchester United are in talks with Sporting Lisbon for goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
The Mirror says Sir Alex is in the market for a new No 1 after 40-year-old Edwin van der Sar refused to perform a U-turn on his summer retirement plans.
And Fergie has now set his sights on Portuguese star Patricio after missing out on a host of other targets.
The 24-year-old international has been on United’s radar since 2009.
United have told the Portuguese club that they only rate Patricio at around £6million.
However, Sporting are aware of the need to find a replacement for Van der Sar smartish and they believe a compromise can be reached that will see them get close to their asking price.
