Manchester United confirm signing of goalkeeper David de Gea from Atletico Madrid

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea on a five-year deal.

The Spaniard had long been linked with a move to Old Trafford following the retirement of Edwin van der Sar at the end of last season.

And De Gea has now spoken of his delight at finally completing his move to the club, admitting the interest from the Red Devils made him want to work even harder.

He told MUTV: “I feel very proud and I can’t wait to start playing here.

“When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very, very happy.
"I saw their interest as an extra motivation to work even harder to show off my ability.

"It’s a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I'm keen to do my best and show what I can do.”

The transfer fee has not yet been announced but it is expected to be in the region of £18 million, which would make De Gea the most expensive goalkeeper in English football.

The youngster has attracted the interest of United since making his breakthrough into the Atletico first team in 2009, and he has since gone on to play a big part in Spain’s success at the European Under-21 Championships, where he conceded just two goals.
