Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to rock the Italian transfer market by prising Daniele de Rossi away from AS Roma.
The Daily Star says De Rossi is Ferguson’s No.1 choice to replace Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.
Fergie wants De Rossi, 27, to plug the gap in Manchester United’s midfield. Fergie admits it will be almost impossible to replace Scholes when the midfield veteran retires.
He sent two of his senior scouts to watch De Rossi in Roma’s Serie A clash with Napoli last weekend.
He reckons the Italian is a younger version of Scholes and would bring experience and goals.
But Fergie would have to splash out around £14m to bring De Rossi to Old Trafford in the summer.
